Bats

Your San Antonio home is at risk of bat entry through entry points as small as a dime in diameter. It's pivotal to make sure you hire a professional bat removal technician like those at Wildlife X Team® San Antonio to determine which entry points the winged critters could be getting in through. It might seem innocuous enough that bats are simply nesting in your attic, but these small creatures can cause more damage than you might expect. Contact Wildlife X Team® San Antonio today at 830.253.2810 for help forming a bat control plan today!

Common Bat Damage

Bats, despite their size, can cause severe damage, mostly in the form of unpleasant scents and secondary parasites left in their guano. Learn more below about potential bat damage inside your home:

  • Large piles of bat poop (known as guano) often found in corners of attics or entry points to your attic
    • Did you know bats can defecate up to 30 times a day? That's a lot of dangerous droppings above you! Bat urine can also drip onto walls and stain ceilings.
    • Bat guano can also harbor spores from mold and dangerous diseases like histoplasmosis.
    • Bat guano is usually around 1/4" long, shaped like a cylinder and typically a dark brown or gray.
  • Bats in the attic, whether intentional or accidental
    • Bats are drawn to chimneys because of the dark and isolated potential for nesting and mating. It provides a similar environment to that of their natural nesting and roosting areas in the wild—caves.
    • They can also accidentally fly into or fall into your chimney, especially bat pups who are just beginning learning the flying process.
  • Bites or scratches that can lead to potentially fatal diseases like rabies
    • Other diseases bats can transmit to humans are histoplasmosis, salmonellosis, and secondary parasites like bat bugs (very similar in appearance to bed bugs).

Are Bats Actually Dangerous?

The CDC recommends avoiding coming into contact with a bat, since the majority of human rabies cases reported in the last 20 years were transmitted by bats. The relocation and removal process is also best left to professionals, as bats will not hesitate to bite if threatened. If you are finding signs of bats on your property, please call our Wildlife X Team® San Antonio at 830.253.2810 today. More About Bats

Bats mate during fall and winter, but the pups are not fully developed until spring—when bat populations are most prominent. Texas is home to a number of bat species, including the big brown bat, big free-tailed bat, the Mexican free-tailed bat (which, along with the armadillo, is a state mammal!), among others.
